Before he was slinging high grade meth in Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston was best known for being goofy TV dad Hal Wilkerson in Malcolm in the Middle. The show was considered to define the modern sitcom in the 90s, and it looks like Cranston wants to come back to the Wilkerson family.
Talking with Fox News, Malcolm star Frankie Muniz confirms that Cranston is working on a revival of the show. He says:
“I know Bryan Cranston is really into the idea and he’s kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling… So, there might be something. I would be down 100 percent. But I don’t know — we’ll see what happens.”
We don’t have any details about the show that Cranston is developing now, but if other reboot/sequels could be a hint, we could be seeing a story focused on the next generation of Wilkersons with the kids taking on the adult roles, and Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek taking on the loveable grandparents’ part.
Then again, with a family as dysfunctional as the Wilkersons, they could very much just focus on adult Malcolm trying to wrangle his weird family—kind of like Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. I’m honestly just spit-balling here.
A Malcolm in the Middle reboot hasn’t been officially announced, but with a talent like Cranston behind it and the pop-culture legacy of the show, I think we won’t have to wait too long until we can get the Wilkerson’s back on screen, even if only for a limited season.
