Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally get their floor of the precinct back, with an odd injury case greeting them. Also, the Nine-Nine’s Captain relives his days as a detective when his old nemesis breaks out of prison. This time, the Nine-Nine’s power couple deal with family dinners. As this happens, the precinct’s resident playwright injects drama in an undercover mission.
In this week’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) uses drama elements in an undercover mission involving Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Meanwhile, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) gets caught in the middle of Amy Santiago-Peralta (Melissa Fumero) and her brother, David Santiago’s (Lin-Manuel Miranda) sibling rivalry.
Boyle’s Play
After Boyle captures a criminal who has vital information to his case, he encounters a problem. Under normal circumstances, Boyle goes undercover to gain intel. However, the suspect knew Boyle’s identity. With that, Boyle comes up with a plan: he has someone else take over for him. He auditions both Captain Holt and Terry. Surprisingly, Holt gets the role, much to Terry’s disappointment.
To begin, Boyle sends Holt in the holding room to talk to the perp. Holt’s acting gave his cover away, so he sends Terry, telling him that his initial rejection is necessary to make his portrayal convincing. When Terry finally gets in, Boyle’s constant interruptions blew both Terry and Holt’s cover. It turns out that Boyle plans to intentionally make the mission look like it failed so that the suspect would feel unsuspicious when he sends Rosa in. While both Holt and Terry become outraged at first, they eventually accept and commend Boyle’s methods.
The Perfect Son
Amy disliked of having to go to dinner with her mom, Camila Santiago (Bertila Damas) and her brother, David since their family regarded him as the perfect child. The dinner went as expected: Camila boasted about David and his achievements. The crowd cheers for David when he saves Jake from his fake choke act, intended to make Amy look good. Unexpectedly, David’s commanding officer accompanied by other police officers arrest him. To everyone’s surprise, the cops found cocaine in his desk, hence his arrest.
Despite how horrible the situation was, Amy celebrated because of the thought of David losing his perfect child reputation. When Jake and Amy bail him out of jail, David reveals what the situation is. He is investigating a Brazillian drug cartel, and the dirty cops they work with must have planted the cocaine on his desk. The turn of events disappoints Amy since she knew that David is likely to finish his case and receive another award.
Jake tries to make Amy and David’s relationship improve as he convinces Amy to help David. However, Amy takes Jake’s advice not the way he intended it. To Amy, the case would immortalize David’s perfect child status if he died trying to expose the drug cartel. As weird as that sounded, Amy agrees to help David. When they reach the Brazillian drug cartel’s club, David and Amy have a dance-off. Amy fakes an injury to distract the guards who stood in front of the admin office.
Jake, Amy, and David sneak into the office and find the ledger that contained the cartel’s dirty cop associates. Moments later, the guards figure out what is happening, so they head to the office immediately, incapacitating Jake. With her husband’s life on the line, Amy let David shoot at the getaway vehicle’s tires, knowing that he has more skill than she does. Thankfully, the trio manages to arrest the suspects without calling for backup.
Goodbye Rivalry
Their second dinner with David and Camila went comparably different from the previous one since Amy realized that nothing mattered to her more than her husband’s life. However Jake did lecture Camila about her unfair treatment towards Amy, thinking that Amy went to the comfort room because of how bad she felt. Because of this, Jake and Amy ditch the dinner, both happy with what happened.
‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 9 ‘The Golden Child’ Final Verdict
Over time, Captain Holt starts to show more emotion compared to when the series first began. To some, this is an acceptable change in Holt’s character. To others, however, it is an unnecessary change, since his robot-like behavior made him iconic. Still, this episode did not lose touch of the show’s vibe, but providing more time for Boyle and company’s subplot would have made it better.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, March 14th, with ‘Gintars’ at 9/8c on NBC.
