'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 6, Episode 6 'The Crime Scene' Recap: Promises

Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s love-hate friendship came back to find an unexpected criminal copycat. This time, the Nine-Nine’s most brilliant detectives face a case of cold-blooded murder. However, the murder’s overflowing amount of evidence does not ensure its ease of solving. Because of this, the duo faces their hardest case yet.

In this week’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) handle a deceptive murder case. Deep into the investigation, Jake makes the rookie mistake of promising the victim’s relative justice. Meanwhile, Rosa finds herself falling into the same emotional attachment that Jake has for the case.

At first, the crime scene excites Jake. After getting a briefing from the first responders, Jake believed that the mystery of the victims’ case would be tough and challenging, but enjoyable solvable. They had more than enough evidence labeled on the scene, and Jake and Rosa even started with their first impressions on the crime.  It seemed like the duo would have fun conducting the investigation– until the victim’s mother arrives.

Empty Promise

As soon as Jake starts to hear the mother’s story, he could not bear the thought of letting her down. Since he grew up under the care of a single mother, the victim’s mother reminded him of his mother. However, Jake’s emotional attachment to the case becomes his downfall. For months, Jake tried to come up with something before Major Crimes took over the case. At some point, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) visited them at the crime scene, telling Jake and Rosa about Major Crimes’ inevitable takeover. Still, Jake insisted on asking Captain Holt to stall them. Unfortunately, Rosa had to give the case to Major Crimes since Jake was losing his mind with the matter. It has reached a point where Jake was obsessed with it.

To say that Jake went ‘Crazy’ with the case is an understatement. After Rosa has him pulled back to the station, Jake recreates the crime scene in the briefing room. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) portrayed the victim’s body as Jake used makeshift materials, such as red post-its and ketchup, to recreate the bloody murder scene. When Rosa and Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) sees what he did, they order Jake to take everything down. Despite this, Jake does not let up. Instead, he recreates the scene in his bedroom, with his sleeping wife, Amy Santiago-Peralta (Melissa Fumero) an unwilling part of the simulation.

Finally, Jake faces the reality of the murder and confronts the victim’s mom. This time, however, Rosa gets emotionally attached when the mother tells them about their last encounter, reminding Rosa about her current issue with her mom, Julia Diaz (Olga Merediz), whom she has not spoken with for over a year. Nine-Nine’s top detectives take on the case once more, only to find the crime scene cleaned up. Unexpectedly, they find a new piece of evidence that they overlooked. The air conditioning is now functional, and it made a strange noise. When Jake finds evidence inside the vents, the investigation goes back on full throttle. Eventually, they arrest the killer who was hired by the victim’s boss since the victim was about to expose his boss’ corruption. With that, Jake and Rosa solve the case but potentially take on another emotionally-attached one, well, at least Jake does.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 6 ‘The Crime Scene’ Final Verdict

The show does something it does not usually do. This episode focused on one main plot only, and it does so unexpectedly well. The other characters of the show get air time for comic relief, and the main plot was undoubtedly entertaining. Also, the show’s hairstylist must have had fun designing many wigs for Rosa, who changed them almost daily. It is nice to see that the show continues to explore ways to make their audiences, both old and new, laugh and be entertained.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, February 21st, with ‘The Honeypot’ at 9/10c on NBC.
