‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 16 ‘Cinco de Mayo’ Review: Agendas

Published 6 years ago
After a brief reunion with their former secretary now social media star, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a surprise heist. Because of how tense Lieutenants’ exams can be, the squad decides to help their beloved Sergeant relax. However, what first seemed as a stress-relieving game erupts into chaos. Each member of the Nine-Nine goes to great lengths to win the Cinco de Mayo Heist Six’s Grand Championship.
On Thursday night’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the squad decides to have the Halloween heist early to distract Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) who worries about his Lieutenants’ exam. As the precinct goes into a full-blown civil war, the boundaries of family, marriage, and friendship cease to exist temporarily.
Tasers
Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) usually pit against each other during heists. They typically have a multitude of tricks up their sleeves to ensure victory. Regardless of how sudden this year’s heist was, Jake and Amy remain prepared. Jake partners with (and betrays multiple times) Terry while Amy pairs up with Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) who surprisingly has a solid strategy to win. Perhaps the best example of how crazy the lengths that Jake and Amy took is when they both tase each other using gifts that they bought for each other. Neither of them wins, though.
Clones
The Nine-Nine has an abundance of Boyles and Scullys when Jake brings Norm Scully’s (Joel McKinnon Miller) twin brother, Earl Scully. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), on the other hand, brings back his thought-to-be-dead doppelganger, Bill (Winston Story) back to the heist after Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) betrays him. Ultimately, however, Earl’s presence caused chaos as he and Norm fight because Earl slept with Norm’s wife. Also, Bill served no purpose whatsoever; he just wanted to be with the squad.
Betrayal Tracker
The endgame of the heist is that whoever has Scully’s medical bracelet wins. Initially, Jake has Terry as his partner. Holt and Amy work together while Rosa and Boyle pretend not to participate. Michael Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) joins Scully, locked in a supply room. Jake betrays Terry after deploying Earl. Holt and Amy scramble to take Earl’s bracelet off, but Terry and Norm escape the room, giving Boyle the chance to steal the bracelet from Jake. Rosa ships Boyle to New Jersey after knocking him out, giving the bracelet to Holt. I could go further, but they betray each other so many times that it gets quite confusing.
Cinco de Mayo Heist Six Grand Champion
It turns out that Terry orchestrated the entire heist. From its cancellation in last year’s Halloween to sowing seeds of heist related conflict, Terry made sure that everything went his way. None of them expected him to win, let alone on the day of his Lieutenants’ exam (which happened a month ago). Thanks to Terry’s real partner, Holt and Kevin Cozner’s (Marc Evan Jackson) pet dog, Cheddar, Terry won this year’s late heist. They should all prepare for Kevin’s wrath, however, who wanted nothing to do with the heist in the first place.
‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 16 ‘Cinco de Mayo’ Final Verdict
Brooklyn Nine-Nine always sparks things up when they do the heist episodes. Much like everyone else in the show, no one expected Terry to win the heist, let alone the viewers. The number of betrayals in this episode is too damn high. Also, it brought about the strangest of possibilities to life, like Scully having a twin. The next heist happens in six months, so we should expect the craziest of the crazy to surface.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, May 16th with ‘Sicko’ at 9/8c on NBC.
