Bones Stars David Boreanaz & Emily Deschanel Tease

A game-changing season finale, one of the most “grotesque” bodies yet, rampant conspiracy theories that threaten to undermine just about everyone and a possible new romance for Sweets are just some of the things Bones fans can expect from the show’s final two episodes this season.

ScreenSpy jumped on a call yesterday with series stars David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel to discuss, among other things, the finale episode, David’s latest directorial spin, the challenges of maintaining on-screen chemistry after so many years and where the show might go in season 10.

On Directing

“It’s always a challenge to take on something like a season finale,” explains Boreanaz. “You get to the end of the season and everybody is a little tired and worn out. The patience is thin. And with this specific season finale, being that there was so much information that we had to gather up and put out there in one 45 minute hit, was difficult and challenging.”

“There were lots of elements involved, whether it was dealing with a big huge hearing in front of congress or an intense battle between other forces that could come in and jeopardise Bones and Booth’s relationship, as well as well as the outcome to where they’re headed as far as season ten is concerned. You take all that into account and by the end of it you’re pretty exhausted,” he admits.

On Being Directed by David

“I loved being directed by David,” says Deschanel. “I’m not just saying that. I think David is really talented as a director. He has a whole other career if he wants it. He’s great technically. He’s enthusiastic. He’s decisive. He knows what he wants. He knows what he doesn’t want. I’m amazed at how he deals with all these incredible elements and makes it seem so easy. There are huge scenes – like David mentioned the Congressional Sub Committee. There’s a lot that’s going on in this episode, without giving too much away. A lot of elements, and he does it all with ease. I love working with him. It was a pleasure to work once again with him both as an actor and as a director. Working on the season finale was a great experience. There’s a big cliffhanger, and a lot going on for Booth and for Brennan. I think everyone will be pleased.”

A “Detrimental” and “Game-Changing” Finale

“This is kind of an unusual investigation because the dead body has something to do with the whole story and Booth’s friends,” previews Deschanel. “There’s a connection to Wesley Foster, the victim. Booth gets a mysterious phone call from this man he does’t know [Foster] who says he wants to talk about the McNamaras, the people who were related to the Ghost Killer case. In fact, Stephanie McNamara was the Ghost Killer. This has to do with the broader parts of the McNamara story. So Booth gets a call from this guy, who is a conspiracy blogger, and the next thing you know, this guy is burned to death in his trailer in very suspicious circumstances, and it leads us to think there might be people involved with this at the FBI. It leads to lots of things, and is connected to the whole story.”

“I gotta say, Emily does such an amazing job,” Boreanaz puts in. “Her dialogue is so rich and thick and heavy as far as the technical aspect of it goes. This last episode is very emotional, and has some really great arcs in it for her character. I’ve seen it, and it’s extremely amazing to watch. There were some days that were kind of rough because we were going through this, and Emily’s character had to be very emotional, but she kept it together, and she elevated her game, and I’m so proud of her for that. It was a hard, hard shoot to do, and it took a toll on everybody.”

How an Explosive Finale Will Alter Bones and Booth’s Relationship?

“There’s a huge thing that happens at the end of this episode that changes everything, not only for Booth and Brennan but also for Booth’s job and possibly Brennan’s job as well,” teases Deschanel. “It will change the dynamic and everything about them and their work and relationships.”

“I think it puts them in a different place, for sure,” notes Boreanaz. “There are a lot of destructive forces that come upon us. There’s more to it than meets the eye. Forces have been working underground for some time – whether that’s through conspiracy theories, stuff they’ve been hiding in the FBI or through the Jeffersonian – it all kind of comes to a head and it’s pretty detrimental at the end. Things will change, for the good, but there will also be things they will have to adjust to. I keep saying “adjusting” because it’s definitely going to be different. As we’re heading into a new season and thinking about what we’re going to do with these characters, it’s interesting!”

Surprises From New Squintern Jessica

“Brennan thinks that the new Squintern is very good at her job, but she does not care for the way she guesses about things and makes assumptions,” Deschanel explains. “Brennan is by-the-book and doesn’t appreciate that. Laura Spencer plays the new intern, and she’s kind of an intuitive person. Even though she’s very smart, and her intuition probably comes from experience, she throws things out there. In the episode coming up, she’s like “I’m just getting a vibe this vic. was an athlete.” And then we get evidence that he was an athlete.”

But Brennan won’t be the only one put off by Jessica’s nature.

“She really rubs Sweets the wrong way, but then that attention might turn romantic,” notes Deschanel. “She has some interest in Sweets. That’s kind of an interesting development. Brennan respects her, but likes to keep her in line, because she goes off on tangents a bit. She’s a little too intuitive for Brennan.”

On Maintaining On-Screen Chemistry After So Many Years

“You guys just see the good days. There are bad days!” Boreanaz laughs. “But seriously, I’m blessed to have a co-star that can be honest and tell me “You’re bothering me today” or “I have an issue.” I think that we have complete trust and respect for each other that we can can just go aside and say “Look, I’m having a bad day and if you know where I’m coming from we can just hang in there.””

“We both support that in each other. Shooting a show is hard enough, and it takes a lot of time. It takes away from your personal life and your family life. Thank God I was blessed with a co-star who is so generous and supportive. If we have a bad day, we have a bad day, recognize it and move on.  We don’t hold on to it. We don’t judge. I think that helps our chemistry because we use it. We use what we’re going through in our scenes. I learned early on that it helps our chemistry and helps us grow with the characters rather than remain stagnant,” he notes.

“You can’t just say “Hey, we’re in season nine!” then kick back and do nothing. You’ve got to be able to push every moment and every scene. It’s so important. So yeah, we have those moments but I think that’s what helps us.”

Bones continues on May 12 with “The Drama in the Queen” before airing its ninth season finale on Monday May 19 with “The Recluse in the Recliner” at 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT.
