Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena may be playing Blue Beetle for DC now, but he was being eyed for another role in Kevin Smith’s now-cancelled Strange Adventures.
As it turns out, Smith wanted Mariduena to play the part of Superman’s kid friend Jimmy Olsen, but the series had been cancelled, and Mariduena never got the call. Even if the series isn’t happening though, Mariduena says he’s still open to playing the Daily Planet’s plucky young photographer:

With Blue Beetle expected to come out next year, it’s very likely that Marideuna may become too big of a face to appear in a small role like Jimmy Olsen; I mean, even Zack Snyder thought the part was pretty minor that he killed him off in Batman v Superman. Let’s also not forget that the Strange Adventures project itself was cancelled.
Who knows, with every series getting revivals now and again, maybe there’s a chance for Strange Adventures to get picked up down the line. As of now though, it seems that the new heads of WB Discovery are set on tax write-offs—and even a completed project like Batgirl has been shelved.
As far as we know, Blue Beetle managed to survive the great WB purge, and we might see a teaser sometime soon. Though the character is generally obscure, he remains a fan-favorite, and Mariduena seems to be perfectly cast.
Blue Beetle is set to come out Aug. 18, 2023.
