Demons Attack
A band of warriors chases two demons in the woods. They escape by jumping off a cliff and heading toward a nearby village.
Heron goes to the market to sell the ore he’s mined for the day, and the merchant forces him to accept less than what it’s worth. There’s a commotion in the square as the band of warriors arrive. Their leader, Alexia, asks them if they saw the demon, and she warns them to go back to their homes as they search.
In a nearby ditch, Heron sees an older man named Elias suffering an injured leg. When Heron goes to fetch some water, he sees a woman lying down in a nearby pool. Upon inspection, he discovers that the woman is dead. Suddenly a demon attacks him from behind.
Heron pulls out a knife, but the demon is too strong for him to fight off. The demon tries to pin him down when Alexa arrives to impale it. The Grand Archon slowly chips away at the demon with her sword and dagger. Heron smacks its face with a torch at the last minute, but it escapes. Alexa continues to track it down.
The villagers are called to get back to safety as Alexa traces the demon’s steps. She recognizes a demon disguised as a man, evidenced by its wounds.
The Giants
Alexa addresses the whole village, telling them of a cult of monsters attacking from the east. They have the demon tied up and chained to a pillar. Alexa takes an iron poker, puts it in a fire, and plunges it into the man’s chest, revealing his true nature. The demon tells everyone that they must convert or die. Alexa decapitates him. The other demon sees this and flees.
Heron and his mother take Elias to their hut. Elias tells him a story about the war against the giants. When the gods defeated the titans, they left a curse on the gods who created the giants. They were brought to destroy the realms of the gods. The gods battled against them, but neither side would relent; until one day, Zeus worked with two of them, ending the conflict by betraying the others.
Hermes gathered their souls in a cauldron, and Hephaestus created a guardian to watch over it so their evil would never return. As ages passed, one of the giant’s remains washed ashore. The men who came in contact with it became demons who hated the gods and could hide under a human guise.
Elias says the gods allow it to make men stronger through adversity. The old man offers them a rabbit in thanks and asks for some stew.
Call to Battle
The next day, the soldiers burn the demon’s body for everyone to see. Alexia approaches Heron and thanks him for his help; she also asks him to join their fight. He refuses, saying the people out there don’t even care for them, and there’s no reason for him to help.
Heron goes home and fills his bags with supplies. Heron’s mother stops him and tells him he’s not a bastard. But before she could finish, the villagers arrive, accusing Heron’s mother of being one of the demons.
Heron takes his knife and fights them. He’s outnumbered, but he shows some prowess. His mother takes the iron poker and burns her arm to prove she’s innocent.
Because of this incident, Heron contemplates joining the army, and Elias points him to a location by the mountains to mine adamantine ore and make a sword.
Ares appears behind Elias. It turns out he’s Zeus in disguise, and he sees Heron as the one who can lead humankind in this battle.
Our Thoughts
The visuals could have been better, but the lore and story setup are top notch. It doesn’t seem to be a rehash of a familiar story either. I rate this a 3.5/5.
