THE BLACKLIST Recap:

By Kai Greenwell

The Blacklist concluded Mr Solomon’s two-parter this week and pulled no punches. Tom and Liz escape the wedding shootout, but before they can catch their breath Solomon is guided to their position by some very kitted out operator. Solomon forces them to crash and abandon their car to escape on foot.

They hide from him and his team, but Liz and the baby were hurt during the crash and have to give up their hiding spot to seek medical assistance. Solomon’s operator tracks them to a nearby hospital but Red convinces them to leave and come to his secure facility before Solomon can capture them both.

The doctor tells them that the baby isn’t getting enough oxygen and that he needs to perform an emergency caesarean. Everything goes fine and Tom and Liz think about what to call their baby girl. Before they can enjoy their moment, Liz starts suffocating and has to be ventilated until Red can procure more specific breathing equipment to help her breathe.

The damage to Liz’s lungs is too severe to be treated at their facility and the doctor tells Red they’re going to have to make a break for it to a nearby hospital. Red and his team, along with Ressler and his, coordinate to try and make a clear route to the hospital. Solomon’s operator quickly finds them and ambush Liz and Red’s convoy.

Solomon orders his team to take Liz alive and unharmed while Red tries to shoot a hole through which they can escape. Ressler and Navabi arrive behind Solomon’s team and quickly eliminate them but by time they reach the van, they see Red holding Liz’s lifeless hand.

Red leaves and goes to see Tom, who is panicking about how to be a father on his own.

 RIP?

As with every major character death, in every show ever, the first question on your mind after the silent fade to credits is “are you really dead?” There were a few things that suggest Liz isn’t dead, other than her being the show’s main character.

The reference to duck hunting and how they’d use a decoy was obviously about the switching of vehicles, but with her friend/doctor’s help it may have been a nod to her faking her death to escape Red’s clutches before he locked her away Rapunzel style. Mr Kaplan was outraged with Red and asked to speak to Liz privately to calm her down. While she would never sell Red out to an enemy, both her and Dembe have spent weeks holding their tongues about how Red treats Liz. Perhaps their allegiances now lie tied between both Red and Liz.

OR, this is another extremely well sold con by Raymond Reddington. His imploring of Dembe to make sure his people handle Liz’s body and not the morgue could be Red not wanting strangers touching Liz, or signs that Liz is alive and it is Red who is looking to steal her away.

The storyline of Solomon’s new employer, potentially Liz’s mother, remains unresolved and while it could lead to a hunt-and-kill style season ending with the team looking for vengeance, it could equally be a sign that Liz will be back and meet face to face with the mystery person looking to abduct her.

It would be VERY new ground for a show to lose its main character like this (and have them remain dead Graceland) and if told correctly, it could make for a thunderous third act for the season. However given how it would severely limit the longevity of the series, Liz being a main character and the fact that they definitely won’t want Megan Boone taking her talents elsewhere, I remain hopeful that Liz will Houdini her way back into the show before the finale’s credits roll.
