Black Panther Trailer Breakdown: The Takeaways

The sleek, bulletproof, vibranium-coated “Black Panther” has stepped into the spotlight. The praised King and Avengers warrior finally has his own Marvel movie and everyone is excited about it! Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) on the flesh was first glimpsed on “The Avengers: Civil War.” With his own movie to be released, what can we expect from Marvel’s Black Panther?

Black Panther Trailer: Interrogation Room revelations

The trailer lights up to an interrogation room with who appears to be a badly injured Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis), in contrast with the rather dapper looking CIA agent, Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman). Apparently, Klaw has peeked into the hidden utopia that is Wakanda, and knows too much about it. His narration cuts to clips of this so-called ‘El Dorado’ brought to life.

Wakanda isn’t the easiest nation to imagine. To picture a land of rich culture and astonishing futuristic technology– it’s a clash of metals and colorful garbs donned on people. It’s a very vivid take into the MCU’s uncharted country.

Other than Klaw’s mission to steal the vibranium, it seems that Klaw has intentions of sating his curiosity on what his eyes have witnessed. He will again be seen shooting with a crazy look in his eyes.

Treason from factions of Wakanda

A few more seconds into the trailer and an explosion will come from the wall. Then appears Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan)– a Wakanda native who has a vendetta against T’Challa’s father. In one of the clips, T’Challa is seen engaging in a swordfight against him– an opponent seen as his equal.

Marvel has written in its plot that there will be people who will attempt to overthrow the Black Panther. Guess there will be a partnership between Klaw and Killmonger– a dangerous relationship that will surely shake the peace in the community.

A few seconds later and more villains appear. More notably is the Man-Ape (Winston Duke) who is holding up one of their victims. Looks like Black Panther’s got a lot on his hands– including some of his people. Will these villains come together? Who knows.

T’Challa as a Ruler and as Black Panther

The challenge that T’Challa faces isn’t just the fight against man. He has a battle within himself as silently revealed in the trailer. He is a king, a ruler of Wakanda who must adhere to his political responsibilities. The trailer shows T’Challa standing before the UN to deliver his address. There are galas, fancy chandeliers and ballrooms– the glitz of the outside world.

At the same time, he is Black Panther, the Avengers warrior who must seek the protection of his people, of his throne and of their livelihood. Toward the end, Black Panther shows off his purple energy blast– one of his greatest superpowers.

Black Panther trailer reveals old love interest, Wakanda wise man, T’Challa’s father, mother and more

There were plenty characters that were revealed in the trailer– just goes to show that this is going to be packed with action, drama, and intrigue. One of which is Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o)– T’Challa’s old admirer in the comics whose obsession turned a little psychotic, resulting to another of Black Panther’s enemies. It looks like she’ll sustain the role in the film as she is seen causing quite a ruckus in a ballroom.

Back in Wakanda, Zuri (Forest Whittaker) is a wise elder spiritual leader– a fitting character who will most likely advise T’Challa in his ruling. We also catch a few seconds of T’Challa’s mother, Ramonda. In the comics, she died from giving birth to him. What could Ramonda’s role be for the story development?

Finally, T’Challa’s father (John Kani) does the voice over: ‘You are a good man with a good heart. And it’s hard for a good man to be a king.’ It could be foreshadowing the Black Panther’s battle of wills.

Black Panther premieres February 16, 2018. Watch the trailer below:
