'Birds of Prey' Trailer Gets Exclusive Theater-Only Preview Treatment

In an effort to restore the spoiler-free and internet-less movie experience, Warner Bros. is going old school with the teaser trailer for Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation One Harley Quinn (whew, that’s a mouthful).

Movie previews during the screening for It: Chapter Two surprised viewers with a trailer that started off disguised as an ominous footage of the movie—red balloons floating all over the screen. The balloons pop to reveal Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who’s “fucking over clowns” at this point. Of course, normal fans would assume that the trailer will also hit YouTube soon enough. But it turns out that Warner Bros. won’t release the teaser in any other form outside of the theater, according to Variety.

Despite the studio’s efforts to keep all things Birds of Prey within theater premises, the trailer still managed to find its way online. Fans were able to get a sneak peek of the upcoming Suicide Squad spin-off. The leaked footage shows Harley popping Pennywise’s balloons to quip about how much she hates clowns (goodbye, Mister J!). It then follows up with a quick montage of Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary, and Rosie Perez’s Detective Renee Montoya engaging in a brawl with a few thugs. Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask is also seen taunting the all-female superhero team.

You can check out the leaked footage here (hurry ’cause it might get taken down soon).

Similar to the first Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer, Birds of Prey will sport a comedic and lighthearted tone that the recent DC films seem to employ following Aquaman and Shazam!. The motley crew will team up to protect soon-to-be Batgirl Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from Black Mask, one of Gotham City’s most notorious crime bosses. It’s unclear if Birds of Prey will connect to the DC Extended Universe’s timeline (seeing how most of the new DC movies are going on a standalone route) or if it will be directly related to James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad relaunch.

It seems you’d have to go see It: Chapter Two to get a double serving of Warner Bros.’ hottest and most-anticipated films with Birds of Prey as the cherry on top. The film is also slated to premiere on February 7, 2020.
