More updates about Warner Bros. next slate of DC films continue to pour out by the minute. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Margot Robbie would star in and produce Birds of Prey, an upcoming DC movie that focuses on the female superheroes and villains in the vast universe of Batman’s story. Now, more characters are joining the film.
According to The Wrap, Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya are set to become the main characters of Birds of Prey, alongside Robbie’s Harley Quinn. And since these characters are the protagonists of the film, The Wrap also reports that the villain will be a Batman villain that was never seen on the big screen until now.
Here’s a brief background of the four new characters for Birds of Prey:
- Black Canary (AKA Dinah Lance) is a skilled martial arts fighter and a vigilante who uses her sonic scream abilities to defend herself. Lance’s mom, Dinah Drake, first took on the mantel but was eventually passed on to Lance when she got older. Black Canary often works with Green Arrow/Oliver Queen and are also romantically linked to each other.
- Huntress (AKA Helena Bertinelli) was initially written as Batman and Catwoman’s daughter but was eventually scrapped to give way for a new origin story. Bertinelli was an orphaned daughter who grew up swearing vengeance against the mafia for killing her family. Huntress is a vigilante that operates in Gotham City, and a member of the Batman family.
- Cassandra Cain took up the fourth mantel of Batgirl. She is the daughter of two assassins and was trained to be a skillful warrior and a bodyguard to Ra’s al Ghul. Batman took her to replace Bertinelli as Batgirl, and ultimately became Batman Incorporated’s Black Bat.
- Renee Montoya was a former detective for the Gotham City Police Department. The Question/Vic Sage then selected her as his successor following his death.
In an interview with Collider, Robbie said that Birds of Prey would be an R-rated girl gang film. Cathy Yan will direct the movie from a script written by Christina Hodson (who’s also currently penning the screenplay for the Batgirl movie). Birds of Prey was created by Chuck Dixon, Gary Frank, and Jordan B. Gorfinkel.
