From the 1980s New York City ballrooms, Billy Porter is being whisked to a fairytale land far far away. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Porter is in talks to join Sony’s upcoming remake of the classic tale of Cinderella.
Although Sony and Porter have both not released official statements about the news, Porter is reportedly taking up the role of the wand-bearing fairy grandmother. If the deal pushes through, we’ll be seeing him granting the wishes of Camila Cabello who’s also starring as the glass slipper wearing pauper of the kingdom in her acting debut. Cabello will also be involved in providing music for the upcoming film.
Cinderella Gets a Musical Reimagining
Blockers director Kay Cannon is set to direct the film for Sony’s Columbia label, with plot details tightly kept under wraps. Cinderella is described as a modern reimagining of the classic tale of the orphaned girl with a musical twist put to it. Aside from Blockers, Cannon is also known for her work on the musical comedy Pitch Perfect trilogy. She also earned three Emmy nominations for her work on NBC’s 30 Rock.
James Corden is credited with the original idea of the film. He will be producing the feature film alongside Leo Pearlman under their Fullwell73 banner. Jonathan Kadin will be responsible for the musical score. The film is set to begin production this fall and it is slated for a February 5, 2021 release.
Porter has received acclaim for his performance on Ryan Murphy’s Pose as Pray Tell, emcee to the balls of New York and a mentor to the members of the community. And he recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Role in the series, making history as the first openly Black gay man to win an Emmy in the category. Porter’s musical credits also go far back to his days on broadway. In 2013, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Lola in Kinky Boots. Before that, he was also in American Angels, Grease!, and Miss Saigon. More recently, he was seen in American Horror Story Season 8 as the warlock Behold Chablis. Porter also appeared in Taylor Swift’s “You Need To Calm Down” music video.
Porter’s other upcoming projects include the third season of Pose and Paramount’s comedy Like A Boss together with Salma Hayek, Tiffany Hadish, and Rose Byrne.
