Will & Grace has been adding stars here and there recently for their last season. But the most recent cast addition plays a little closer to the heart than most. According to Deadline, Debbie Reynolds’ granddaughter Billie Lourd is coming on board the show to play the granddaughter of the late Reynolds’ character.
As many might remember, Reynolds played Grace Adler’s (Debra Messing) mother Bobbi Adler in the original show. After her death in 2016, Will & Grace did a tribute episode where Grace took Will with her to her family house to celebrate her late mother’s birthday. Now, a part of her is somehow back on the show through her granddaughter.
Lourd will be playing Fiona Adler who NBC describes as an edgy and self-confident modern woman who’s outspoken but irreverent. And in the episode of her appearance, she will be seeking to reconnect with her “cool aunt” Grace.
“The episode is especially meaningful because of Billie’s relationship to the show,” Will & Grace co-creator and executive producer Max Mutchnick said. “We’re thrilled to have Billie. And best of all — she’s really good.”
Billie Lourd Honors Grandmother Debbie Reynolds
On Thursday, Lourd confirmed the news herself with a sweet little post on her Instagram filled with Reynolds’ photos from the sitcom. “I have watched and loved Will & Grace since I was (probably too) young. So getting to watch my grandma play Grace’s mom was one o’ the coolest things to happen to my young Will and Grace obsessed self,” Lourd wrote in the caption. “Next week I get to play my real-life grandma’s on-screen granddaughter on one of my favorite shows and there are not enough happy adjectives in the world to convey the excitement I feel. Thank you to @maxmutchnick @therealdebramessing @eric_mccormack @meganomullally @seanhayes for bringing me into the Adler fam. ❤️.”
This also isn’t the first time Lourd lands a role with familial relations. In 2017, she appeared in the Star Wars franchise which her very mother Carrie Fisher was well known for. She appeared as Lieutenant Connix in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She also appeared in some scenes with her mother in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through the editing and merging of some of Fisher’s old footage with Lourd’s.
Currently, Billie Lourd is starring in Ryan Murphy’s AHS: 1984 which premiered on Sep. 18 on FX. In addition to Lourd, other stars joining Will & Grace are Demi Lovato and Ryan Phillippe.
