Beastars Season 1 Episode 9 Recap - Into the Lion's Den

Number Four

Rouis wakes up to a bad nightmare: a memory from thirteen years ago. When he was five, he was sold at the Black Market. His item number: four.

An adult deer found him and took him. Rouis resisted at first, as the adult was harsh. He forced Rouis to hold a knife and put him into a room of carnivores as a test.

Rouis would rather kill himself than be eaten. The adult deer: Ogma, Chairman of the Horns Conglomerate, took him in as his child. He believes Rouis can change the world.

He told him to turn his frustration and sadness into strength.

Threats

Rouis visits Tem’s memorial with a strong conviction.

Legoshi remembers Tem — also hesitant to confess his feelings. Last night, he finally realized the true nature of Rouis and Hals’ relationship. He doesn’t know what to do when he finds Rouis in the hall.

He suddenly sees one of the leopards about to attack Rouis. Legoshi strangles the cat and questions him. It turns out a bunch of carnivores is plotting to beat him up. In the upcoming Beastars competition, Rouis’ victory would give a huge advancement for herbivores. The cat tempts Legoshi to do the same.

Legoshi is conflicted. There’s a reason for him to break the deer’s relationship with Hal. The cat escapes, saying there’s no safe place for Rouis. Legoshi’s nose is bleeding.

Confession

Legoshi approaches Hal, still feeling awkward from the day before. He wants to confess his feelings, knowing he won’t succeed anyway. He finally musters up the courage, but Hal doesn’t want to hear it. She evades the wolf until Legoshi grabs her. He tells her it’s okay; he respects Rouis, and he’ll try to be harmless.

Legoshi invites the rabbit to the festival and apologizes for the suddenness of the request. Hal gains some sympathy and agrees. She asks him to take care of his nose.

Hal is stressed out. She can’t see how the wolf can be harmless. Suddenly, two shady men kidnap her.

A group of students finds the shoe she left behind. They report it to the authorities but realize the perpetrators are from Shishi-Gumi. The mayor comes in and assures them he’ll take care of the investigation.

Kidnapping

Legoshi overhears from the group that Hal was taken.

The gangsters complain about their small victim, but seeing that she’s all white with no markings makes things worthwhile. One of the gangsters inspects her when their boss comes in.

The boss plays nice and apologizes to her. He says he won’t hurt her as he interviews her. He then asks her to take off her clothes to show how precious she is.

Scared, the rabbit starts stripping. A room opens, and she is asked to take a bath — a necessary step for food.

The mayor meets Rouis. He tells him of the Shishi-Gumi, and that he’ll have to face them when he becomes Beastar. The mayor asks if he’s friends with Hal. Rouis asks him if he really has to cover up the kidnapping. The mayor says it’s necessary, or the city will fall into disorder. It’s his final test.

He shows Rouis his records from when he was in the Black Market. He’ll wipe them out as a reward for his silence. The mayor then shakes his hand.

Rescue

Legoshi comes to him and asks to rescue Hal. Rouis refuses, saying that it’s a normal occurrence. “But don’t you like Hal?” the wolf asks. Rouis punches him, telling him he doesn’t know anything; the life of a wolf is carefree. Lies are necessary to keep the peace.

The wolf can’t accept it. He punches Rouis, and they get into a scuffle. Enraged, Legoshi promises that Hal will be his.

Our Thoughts

That plot with the mayor and the gangsters feels a little rushed and convoluted to my tastes. Although I can see how it’s necessary, I still wished they could have fleshed it out more as it seems a little too sudden. I rate this 3/5.
