Batgirl Casts Ivory Aquino as the DCEU’s First Trans Character

We’ve known who the main players of Batgirl are for a while from Leslie Grace to Brendan Fraser, but now news has come out for one supporting character that actually made DC history.
According to Deadline, Ivory Aquino (When They See Us) has been cast as Barbara Gordon’s roommate and best friend Alysia Yeoh. In the comics, Alysia was a transgender woman who even ended up dating Barbara’s younger brother James Gordon Jr. We don’t know how much of Alysia’s story could change for the movie, but I can imagine that she would be a regular fixture in Barbara’s apartment.
What’s interesting is, the writer who created Alysia, Gail Simone, had said that Yeoh was at one point intended to don the Batgirl mantle after Barbara Gordon was injured. Alysia never officially got to be Batgirl in the comics, but I can definitely imagine that storyline picking up somewhere in the future. If Spider-Man has Ned and MJ, it’s about time other superheroes got their own small team of friends.
We don’t have a story for Batgirl yet, but we do know that the main adversary will be Firefly played by Brendan Fraser. Having J.K. Simmons reprise the role of Jim Gordon from Justice League has fans wondering if this takes place in the main DCEU timeline, but it’s suspected that The Flash will be tying up any loose multiverse threads when it comes out later this year.
No release date has been set for Batgirl, but expect the film to hit HBO Max sometime soon.
