Asian-Americans Get Raunchy in Trailer for Joy Ride

Adele Lim had made a more general-audience-friendly take on Asians when she wrote Crazy Rich Asians, but now she’s ready to put some Asian-Americans in the spotlight for a raunchy comedy.

Check out the trailer for Joy Ride starring Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), Ashley Park (Emily in Paris), Stephanie Hsu (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once), and Sabrina Wu:

Here’s the official synopsis:

From the producers of Neighbors and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, JOY RIDE stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery centers on four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Sherry Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Stephanie Hsu), her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

While Asians in film are usually depicted as well-behaved academics, it’s pretty refreshing to watch them just be irreverent and funny; while at the same time still having the very tough social pressure that parents put on them.

With a release date set for July, I’m thinking we’re going to be seeing more of the gags in a future trailer, but for now, I’m excited to see this diaspora-fueled odyssey.

Catch Joy Ride when it arrives in theaters July 7.
