A lot of fans are excited for the continuation of Arthur Fleck’s story with Joker: Folie a deux, but Joaquin Phoenix has teamed up with horror director Ari Aster for something that also looks to be a bit of a mind f*ck.
Watch the colourful trailer for Beau is Afraid:
Here’s the official description:
“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer-director Ari Aster.”
Though Phoenix is at the center of the film playing multiple roles in the form of Beau during different stages in his life, the movie also has a star-studded cast which includes Amy Ryan, Patty LiPone, Michael Gandolfini, Richard Kind, and surprisingly, Nathan Lane, who I was sure only did comedy roles.
Though Aster is known for his horror work, it feels like Beau is Afraid is going to be a different kind of film. Sure, there looks to be some horror elements, but based on all the colourful scenes and animated sequences, we could be looking at Aster’s attempt at a surreal drama; not unlike Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.
Then again, I’m only guessing with what we’ve seen in the trailer and the synopsis. I just think it would be interesting for Aster to make some other kind of film besides a horror one.
Catch Beau is Afraid when it comes to cinemas on April 21.
