It’s time for “Aquaman” fans to heighten the excitement. The upcoming DC Extended Universe movie directed by James Wan has just wrapped. The film’s stars Jason Momoa and Amber Heard—who both play Aquaman and Queen Mera respectively—also confirmed the news through photos posted on Instagram. This is a welcome treat for many fans of the DCEU, especially with “Justice League” hitting theaters next month.
“Aquaman” marks the first-ever solo film to be made for the character. Some fans weren’t that excited when it was first teased; because ever since the superhero was introduced in 1941, the character experienced mockery and harsh criticism for being a tasteless superhero who only relies on sea creatures for power. But when Zack Snyder announced that the character will be joining DC’s flagship superhero group for a full-length movie, interest in “Aquaman” spiked. Now that he’s getting his own movie, along with his other co-Justice League heroes, the anticipation has been overwhelming.
‘Aquaman’ wraps filming in Australia
The movie has been filming down under since May of this year and has adopted the working title “Ahab,” to keep the paparazzi confused and the movie safe from potential leaks (though there have been a few of them released). Since then, it has been planned to finish filming by October this year, which was followed to date and now being confirmed as finished by the director himself.

So far so good, right? To keep things in a more celebratory mood, Momoa and Heard also posted a few snapshots of the wrap parties on their Instagram pages.
Here’s one featuring Heard seemingly in her Queen Mera costume while holding a bottle of wine—because nothing else screams sea royalty than a bottle of wine.
It’s good to see everything in order for “Aquaman.” And with the release of “Justice League” next month, it would also act as some kind of an introduction to the character before he hits it off with his own movie next year.
However, it’s worth noting that for “Justice League,” Aquaman will not be the King of Atlantis—at least for now. In an interview with SFX Magazine, Momoa says that he won’t be wearing the crown yet. “Aquaman, he’s not even really Aquaman yet,” Momoa said. “He’s not the King of the Seven Seas. We don’t really get there until my solo movie, at the end.”
Wan also echoes the same thing by saying, “It’s a gigantic arc for Arthur Curry. It may be tough for a lot of fans to watch what they’re gonna see, how I portray him. But you gotta wait until we get to the solo movie to really know. Because he’s not king yet. He doesn’t believe in himself, he doesn’t know what to do with the powers he has. He’s going through tons of loss. He hates Atlanteans. The fact that people are calling him ‘Aquaman’ right now — he couldn’t give two shits about anything Atlantean. So he’s really not quite there yet. That’s kind of tough to play. We gotta figure out the origin, where we’re going. Some people will be like, ‘This isn’t my Aquaman.’ But we’re not there yet.”
“Aquaman” stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanta, Amber Heard as Mera, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko and Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master. The movie is slated for a December 21, 2018 release.
