Before solely committing himself to the Aquaman sequel, James Wan is returning to his horror roots. He is set to direct an untitled original thriller for New Line Cinema according to TheWrap.
Wan has worked together again with The Nun’s Ingrid Bisu to create the story. And he will also serve as the director, writer, and co-producer alongside Michael Clear. But, the question of who will be penning the script is still up in the air as well as other plot details. No casting announcements have also been made. Midas Innovation and Starlight Media are independently financing the film and will be retaining distribution rights in China.
Plunging Back To The World of Horror
Wan made his breakthrough in the horror genre with his horror hit Saw. After the first movie, it soon launched a whole franchise. Then, he moved onto work on collaborations with New Line on the Conjuring and Insidious films. He was also part of other films dealing with the supernatural such as Lights Out and The Curse of La Llorona. But, his last directing credit in the horror genre is Conjuring 2.
For his new project, Wan is set to shoot in the fall in Los Angeles before he moves onto the preproduction of Aquaman 2 sometime in 2020. Wan’s secret film is a recipient of the Independent California Film Rebate. According to Variety, Wan wanted something that fit into the mold before he went back to the world of Atlantis.
Aside from that, James Wan is also set to work with Netflix to direct the pilot episode of The Magic Order, an adaptation of the Mark Millar/Olivier Coipel comic book of the same name. At the same time, he is also working on writing and co-producing the new Conjuring Universe spinoff, The Crooked Man. Wan will also be producing a whole batch of other projects including the third Conjuring movie, an untitled Saw film, Mortal Combat, The Tommyknockers, and The Nun 2.
James Wan is represented by Stacey Testro International, Paradigm, and Mortimer PR.
