‘American Idol’ Season 16, Episode 10: 'Top 24 Celebrity Duets' Part 1 Recap

The Idol hopefuls finally had the chance to sing along with their celebrity idols on tonight’s “American Idol: Top 24 Celebrity Duets.” And before announcing the final 14 finalists, the Top 24 hopefuls still need to impress the audience and the judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. Here’s what happened during the Top 24 All-Star Duets performances.

Catie Turner and Andy Grammer

Catie sang with one of the sweetest singers on earth, and he is none other than Andy Grammer. Catie and Andy did a duet of Andy’s 2015 song “Good To Be Alive.”

The two set the studio in a happy vibe, and successfully put smiles on the judges and audience’s face. There’s no doubt that Catie will not go home early!

Cade Foehner and Bishop Briggs

Cade is one of the early favorites in “American Idol.” Cade has always been very consistent with his performances, and he never fails to amaze the judges. Even Cade’s celebrity partner, Bishop, said that he is a “long-locked lover” who has enchanted everyone.

Cade and Bishop sang “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS. The judges can’t help but give a standing ovation to their performance, and all they could say were good things about him.

Layla Spring and Sugarland

Layla and Sugarland appeared on stage with their gold outfits. They performed Sugarland’s very own song “Stuck Like Glue.” Luke said that it’s hard to sing with someone like Jennifer Nettles, but Layla managed to handle the situation well.

Just like Layla’s other performances, she went beyond her age once again, singing like a pro and adult as well.

Dominique and Aloe Blacc

Dominique sang with Aloe Blacc, and they delivered one of Aloe Blacc’s song called “Wake Me Up.” Well, it was evident that this isn’t Dominique’s best performance but the most important thing is that his vocals were on point.

Katy admitted that she doesn’t know how to critique anymore since all the contestants are excellent while Luke described Dominique as a world-class and versatile singer.

Brandon Diaz and Luis Fonsi

Brandon was very excited to sing with Luis Fonsi. Although Brandon was nervous to deliver a song in Spanish, he opted to disregard it and enjoy the show instead. Brandon and Luis Fonsi performed Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito.”

Brandon appeared on stage with his hair pulled back, and didn’t disappoint everyone in the studio. Singing in a language you are not fluent with is difficult, but Brandon nailed it! Luis said that he is very proud of Brandon.

Kay Kay and Pat Monahan

Kay Kay and Pat Monahan sang “Drive By” by Train, and it seems like the song doesn’t fit Kay Kay’s voice. Kay Kay was not able to show her real singing prowess, but she sounded good all throughout, and most importantly she seemed to be enjoying their performance.

The judges appreciated Kay Kay’s great energy and thought that she took care of her first ever duet.

Trevor McBane and Bishop Briggs

After Cade, it was now Trevor who sang with Bishop Briggs. The two delivered “River” by Bishop himself. It seems that Trevor’s energy didn’t match Bishop’s power but all in all they sound great together.

Michelle Sussett and Luis Fonsi

Michelle and Luis sang Luis’ favorite song “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. In their performance, Michelle was able to show her soft and tender voice.

Michelle and Luis surely have that connection and chemistry on stage. This helped them deliver and convey the song in a very satisfying way.

Johnny Brenns and Andy Grammer

Johnny and Andy performed Andy Grammer’s “Back Home.” It was nice to see Johnny having fun in “American Idol.” Although it was not Johnny’s best performance, he was able to fit in the song. The judges appreciated Johnny’s versatility too.

Dennis Lorenzo and Allen Stone

Dennis was lucky enough to sing with the artist of his audition piece, Allen Stone. Another thing is that they sing the song he sang during his audition entitled “Unaware.” Dennis and Allen’s pairing could be the best among the Top 24 Celebrity Duets Performances. Their voices blend perfectly, and they looked amazing together.

Michael J. Woodard and Pat Monahan

One of the viewers and judges’ favorites, Michael J. Woodard, performed “Blue Jean Angel” with Pat Monahan. Pat wrote the song for his wife, so the two avoided too much eye contact and their strategy worked.

The judges loved their performance, with Katy calling Michael a “beautiful chameleon.”

Gabby Barrett and Sugarland

Gabby looked very comfortable during her performance with Sugarland. They sang “Stay,” Sugarland’s emotional ballad.

Luke said that Gabby nailed it from the start until the last lyrics of the song, adding that Gabby hit the right points as well.
