‘American Idol’ Season 16, Episode 16: Live Top 7 Performances, Prince Tribute Recap

After surpassing the different challenges in “American Idol,” the remaining seven contestants continue to prove that they deserve to stay. Two Idol hopefuls, however, didn’t make it to the next level of the singing competition. The night is also dedicated to the memory of Prince, as our finalists perform songs from the late great pop superstar. And of course, a Prince tribute show wouldn’t be complete without percussionist Sheila E. Nick Jonas also serves as a mentor to our Idol hopefuls.

Jurnee

Jurnee is one of the most memorable contestants in “American Idol.” And it’s not only because she is proudly married to another woman but also because of her unique and incredible voice. During Jurnee’s first Top 7 Performance, she gave a tribute to “Kiss” by Prince. Then, Jurnee performed “Back At One” by Brian McKnight.

It was obvious that Jurnee gave everything for her performances, but it was not just enough for her to go to the next level of the competition. “American Idol” winner or not, Jurnee surely has a bright future as a singer.

Gabby Barrett

Gabby was able to connect with the audience and judges during her performance of “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack. Despite being a country powerhouse, Gabby managed to sing the song very well and was able to showcase a new style.

Gabby picked “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” by Prince as her tribute song. After her performance, she proved that she deserves to stay in “American Idol.”

Gabby continues her journey in “American Idol,” all thanks to the judges who gave her a chance to sing another song during the audition.

Michael J. Woodard

Michael usually stands at the center of the stage to perform. But during his first “American Idol” Top 7 performance, he did something different. Michael gave it his all and performed as a skilled stage performer. He moved around the stage as he sang “I Would Die 4 U” by Prince and the Revolution.

After being a stage performer, Michael was back to being a simple but fantastic singer. He stood in the center of the stage, held the mic, and sang “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion for his second Top 7 performance.

Just like what is expected from Michael, he delivered an outstanding and unforgettable performance in “American Idol.”

Cade Foehner

Cade chose the wrong song during his first “American Idol” Top 7 performance. He sang “Who Will Save Your Soul” by Jewel where he started with a low and rough voice. Cade was pitchy throughout his performance, and he also struggled to hold on the melody.

Fortunately, Cade was able to build the dynamics of the song, erasing all the flaws he made from the start up to the middle of his performance.

During his Prince tribute performance, Cade sang another rock song called “Jungle Love.” One good advice for Cade would be for him to explore other song genres if he wanted to be in the Top 3.

Catie Turner

Catie is one of the early favorites in “American Idol.” So it was surprising and heartbreaking to know that America didn’t save her. Catie sang “Oops!… I Did It Again” by Britney Spears for her first performance.

Catie never failed to amaze the judges and the audience. She has been very consistent in all of her performances. For her second performance, Catie chose to sing “Manic Monday” by The Bangles where she forgot the few lyrics of the song. Despite this, she was able to pick up herself and continue as if nothing happened. Sadly, we will never see Catie perform again on “American Idol,” but she undoubtedly has become one of the greatest singers in the show’s history!

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Caleb sang like a veteran country singer with Lonestar’s “Amazed.” Caleb looked like he was very confident in his performance and he just sang comfortably. There’s no doubt that Caleb is the truest country talent in “American Idol.”

During his second performance, Caleb delivered “When Doves Cry” by Prince and the Revolution. His second performance is his best one in “American Idol” so far.

Maddie Poppe

Maddie sounded like she was telling a story with her performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor. Maddie once again displayed authenticity and sang effortlessly too. Surely, Maddie has a big chance to be the next “American Idol” grand winner.

Maddie sang “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow for her second Top 7 performance. At this point, she never wasted the chance to show the power and versatility of her voice.

“American Idol” continues next Sunday, May 13th, at 8/7c on ABC.
