‘American Idol’ Season 16, Episode 13: ‘Top 14 Live Finals’ Recap

The “American Idol” competitions are getting more exciting as the Top 14 contestants showcase their singing skills and abilities during the Live Finals. One way or another, each of the contestants needs to step up their game if they want the title of America’s new singing Idol.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

This handsome country singer knows how to capture the heart of the viewers and the judges in all of his “American Idol” performances. Caleb tried to go out of his comfort zone and sing something new and incredible. He delivered “Midnight Train to Memphis” by The Steeldrivers.

Caleb might have noticed that he needs to have his own identity in the music industry especially that there are a lot of country singers around the world who sound the same.

Michelle Sussett

Michelle is definitely a pop star in the making. She never fails to bring so much energy in the studio, and it looks like she always does her best in each of her performances.

Michelle sang “FRIENDS” by Marshmello & Anne-Marie for her “American Idol” Top 14 performance. Michelle displayed remarkable Selena vibes, but she also showed her originality using her unique and powerful voice. All of the judges loved Michelle’s performance, but Katy thinks that she chose the wrong song because she was not able to show her overall talent.

Marcio Donaldson

Marcio has shown everyone in “American Idol” how versatile he is as a singer with his delivery of Barry Manilow’s “It’s A Miracle.” Marcio made sure that everyone can relate to his performance even though the song a bit old.

Among the three judges, it was Katy and Lionel who admire Marcio the most.

Mara Justine

Mara became very emotional during her Top 14 performance, and it seemed like crying didn’t do her any favor at all. Mara sang “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” and although her vocals were outstanding, it was pretty evident that her big notes and vocal runs didn’t turn out well as Mara hoped.

Garrett Jacobs

Garrett once again displayed his great vocals with his performance of “Raging Fire” by Phillip Phillips. It looks like Garrett has improved a lot, but he also seems to be trying so hard. It would be better if Garrett maintains his confidence and work on his stage presence. That way, Garrett can move to the next level of “American Idol.”

Ada Vox

Ada continues to stun everyone during her Top 14 Live Performance. Ada sang Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” where she was able to showcase his big and incredible voice. Luke said that Ada’s is the biggest voice he has ever heard.

Catie Turner

Catie is one of the early favorites in “American Idol” this season. Catie’s happy and friendly personality has always been her identity. Aside from these, Catie never disappointed anyone with her performances.

During her Top 14 performance, Catie sang Hozier’s “Take Me To Church.” Just like what everyone expected, Catie made it look like the song is not fit for her when in reality it is is.

Cade Foehner

There’s no doubt that Cade is a great singer but the only problem with him is that he always fails to show something new in “American Idol.”

Cade performed “Black Magic Woman” by Santana, and everything went well. Cade, however, can do more if he would try other singing styles.

Dennis Lorenzo

Dennis proved that he has what it takes to be the next “American Idol” during his Top 14 performance. Dennis decided to perform Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood” and nailed it.

The song suited Dennis’ voice, and it also helped him show his real singing prowess.

Maddie Poppe

Maddie chose the right choice for a song, so just like Dennis, she was also able to display her fantastic voice control and range. Maddie sang “Homeward Bound” by Simon and Garfunkel.

Jurnee

Jurnee has been very consistent from her “American Idol” audition until the Live Playoffs. And during her Top 14 performance, she surprised everyone in the studio, including the judges.

Jurnee delivered”Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj. Many probably doubted if Jurnee can sing the parts of the three women, but she did! The only question left for Jurnee will be if she knows what she’s doing, considering that the Live Finale is coming so fast!

Johnny Brenns

Trying a Brendon Urie vocal is like ending your journey in “American Idol.” But Johnny took the risk and sang “This Is Gospel” by Panic! At The Disco. The good news is that Johnny never tried to sound like Brendon. Instead, he showed his original and unique singing prowess.

Michael J. Woodard

Michael proved that simplicity is the key to success. Michael always makes it look like everything is simple even though it isn’t. He stands at the center of the stage and starts singing with all his might.

Michael sang Sia’s “Titanium” with so much power and grace during his Top 14 performance. There’s no doubt that Michael can win the “American Idol” competitions.

Gabby Barrett

Gabby decided to sing a Miley Cyrus song called “The Climb” during her Top 14 performance. She delivered the song well, but she sounded like Miley all throughout. This means that Gabby didn’t show a jaw-dropping performance.

“American Idol” continues Monday, April 23rd, with the “Top 10 Reveal” at 8/7c on ABC.
