It feels like years since we’ve gotten news that Amazon Prime Video was making a Lord of the Rings series, and now it looks like the streaming platform is now ready to release the show. Just in, we got a new announcement trailer for the title of the series, and we also have a release date as well.
Watch this:
Amazon’s LOTR show is officially titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and will premiere on the platform on September 2, 2022. Here’s the official description:
Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
If the timeline of the Second Age is still unclear, the era essentially ends with the beginning of the LOTR films—where Isildur strikes down Sauron and earns the Ring of Power. We don’t know how far along till we get to that war of the last alliance between elves and men, but it’s going to be interesting to see more lore written around the other rings of power; it would also be great to see what exactly the One Ring could do besides turn whoever wears it invisible.
As of now, fans are still wondering who the main cast of characters will be, but we know at some point that a younger Elrond was going to appear. It’s possible that Isildur will also be a main character in the show, but I’m interested to see what other races can be represented like dwarves and hobbits; maybe we can even get an appearance from the mysterious Blue Wizards.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 2.
