Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza were sitcom favorites, but they’ve since moved on star in more films. Just in, they’ve teamed up with The Little Hours director Jeff Baena for an odd-looking film called Spin Me Round.
Watch the trailer:
Here’s the official description:
A woman wins an all-expenses trip to a company’s gorgeous “institute” outside of Florence, and also the chance to meet the restaurant chain’s wealthy and charismatic owner. She finds a different adventure than the one she imagined.
While the trailer itself feels like some kind of mysterious thriller, it is categorized as a comedy film; and it kind of drives the point home with all these comedy actors in the movie. Apart from Brie and Plaza, the movie also includes the likes of Fred Armisen, Molly Shannon, Zach Woods, and Lil Rel Howery.
If you’ve watched Baena’s films before, you’ll know his films aren’t just straight-up comedies. Sure Little Hours had some pretty fun moments, but the film also gets oddly dark—as if someone just decided to add jokes to Robert Eggers’ The Witch. If you look at his other Alison Brie-fuelled project, Horse Girl, that film was just straight up bonkers (or, you know, artsy).
When it comes to Spin Me Round, there does seem to be some kind of dark undertone to the entire film, but any fan of Baena’s would probably be game. The cast is great, and Baena never delivers a generic movie.
Spin Me Round is set for a release on Aug. 19.
