Great news for Alien fans. It is being reported that Ridley Scott is poised to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Alien: Covenant movie. In celebrating its 40-year legacy, the director sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter where he confirmed that there are upcoming plans for future Alien movies with studio giants Disney and Fox.
The 1979 Alien movie is loved by fans and critics alike. It would go on to make $105 million worldwide in the box office (adjusted gross being $283.5 million). In addition, the movie spawned three sequels and two crossovers with the Predator franchise. The two prequels being 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant, both of which were directed by Scott.
On its way to being a revered classic, the Alien franchise also birthed a few icons such as Sigourney Weaver, who played badass Ellen Ripley and Tom Skerritt who played Captain Dallas. Furthermore, it skyrocketed director Ridley Scott to his very first commercially successful movie. He would go on to direct other box office darlings—Blade Runner and Gladiator; the latter of which proved to be one of his biggest critical and commercial success as it won five Academy Awards.
‘Alien: Awakening’ Plot Details
In a separate report, ScreenRant claimed the third Alien prequel to be known tentatively as Alien: Awakening. The plot will reportedly focus on David the android, played by Michael Fassbender, And the engineers wanting to exact revenge against him for his crimes of genocide in Alien: Covenant.
This is in line with the director’s earlier statements of wanting to make the aliens, Xenomorphs, lesser antagonists. Characters like David, artificial intelligence, will take up the role of main antagonists in future movies. The movie also seems to be the last prequel judging from an interview with Scott. The quote cited by Empire mentions Scott stating, “we’re gonna actually go to the planet,”. This inadvertently means going to the start, LV-426, back to where the Alien franchise started. This time, however, it might be wrapping up the series for good.
Cast and Release Date of Alien: Awakening
Casting details on Alien: Awakening are yet to be announced. Fassbender previously stated he is open to reprising his role as David. The sequel’s release date is also kept under wraps.
