Robert Eggers is a director that’s proven to have a very unique voice when it comes to period pieces, and after his work on The Witch and The Lighthouse, he’s gone ahead to tackle ancient Vikings in The Northman.
Here’s a new still of Alexander Skarsgård via Total Film:
With Alexander Skarsgård slowly getting the reputation for being the “hot” Skarsgård brother, we should expect him to have physically transformed his body for this film as well. Eggers tells TF (via GamesRadar), “The amount of discipline that Alex put into this role is crazy… He transformed his body more wildly than he did in Tarzan.”
Besides Skarsgård, the movie is also sporting an all-star cast which includes Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, and Björk. Eggers alum Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) are also making appearances in the movie.
With Eggers previously working on films with a minimal cast, The Northman is looking to be his largest film yet. Even if the scale is larger, we should still expect some of that signature Eggers charm. He continues, “I was utterly terrified, but it’s a major privilege to be able to do something like this… It’s been exciting. The studio let me use all my head of departments from my last two films, and I was able to work with the top Viking historians in the world, which was incredible.”
Here’s the synopsis for The Northman:
Written by Robert Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón Sigurdsson, Northman is described as a grounded story set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century that centres on a Nordic prince who seeks revenge for the death of his father.
The Northman hits theaters this April 22.
