After the successful run and critical acclaim of the first two seasons of Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail on Stitcher, another groundbreaking Marvel comic book series is joining the podcast platform in the form of Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek’s award-winning 1994 storyline, MARVELS. The new series comes just as it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
According to Marvel Comics’ announcement, MARVELS is set to undergo a 10-episode podcast series treatment, with Cliff “Method Man” Smith, AnnaSophia Robb, Ethan Peck, and Seth Barrish joining the initial voice cast. It’s scheduled for a fall 2019 release, which will eventually hit all podcast platforms in 2020.
‘MARVELS’ Joining the Podcast Sphere
MARVELS is a more grounded take on the golden age of Marvel’s superheroes, through the eyes of photojournalist Phil Sheldon. The comic’s narrative follows the aftermath of Galactus’ New York invasion, prompting a battle where the Fantastic Four emerged victoriously. And just as these “Marvels” pervade Sheldon’s current reality, he will be forced to navigate through the chaos caused by the battle as well as debunk a conspiracy theory of superhuman proportions. He is joined by “an ambitious college student and a cynical journalist” in their quest to find out the truth.
The cast includes Smith as Ben Urich, Robb as Marcia Hardesty, Peck as Mr. Fantastic, and Barrish as Phil Sheldon. Also joining them are Louisa Krause as Sue Storm, Jake Hart as Ben Grimm, Ehad Berisha as Johnny Storm, Teo Rapp-Olsson as Peter Parker, and Gabriela Ortega as Charlie Martinez. Paul Bae will direct, from a script written by Lauren Shippen based on Busiek’s story.
In a statement, Marvel New Media SVP and GM Shane Rahmani expressed his excitement on the new project between Marvel and Stitcher. “Building off our award-winning momentum of Marvel’s Wolverine: The Long Night and its sequel Marvel’s Wolverine: The Lost Trail, the New Media team is thrilled to continue to push the envelope of Super Hero storytelling via the scripted podcast medium. We are passionate about the space and feel we’ve brought the right cast, story, and intrigue in this latest installment.”
