Adam Driver is setting his eyes for a role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming period piece, The Last Duel.
According to Variety, The Star Wars: The Last Jedi mainstay joins Matt Damon in a leading role that centers on two knights whose friendship is tested by betrayal and a woman. Ben Affleck was initially presumed to star alongside Damon but had to take on a supporting role due to scheduling conflicts with his other project at New Regency, titled Deep Water. Also starring in a supporting role is Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer.
Variety’s logline for the film reads, “set in 14th century France, “The Last Duel” is an epic tale of betrayal and justice, told from three distinct points of view: two knights (Damon and Driver) whose bond is tested by treachery and a young woman (Comer) forced to navigate the brutal and oppressive culture of the era in order to survive.” Another logline reads, “King Charles VI declares that Knight Jean de Carrouges settle his dispute with his squire by challenging him to a duel.”
Scott will be directing the movie for Disney-Fox, which is still awaiting a go signal. Should it be greenlit, The Last Duel will head into production in early 2020. Damon and Affleck will produce the period drama and write the script with Nicole Holofcener as a co-writer.
Driver, on the other hand, is enjoying a busy movie slate this year. His roles in Netflix’s Marriage Story and Amazon’s The Report are currently making positive rounds among critics and fans (and possibly an Oscar nod). But perhaps Driver’s most awaited role is the upcoming conclusion of the Skywalker saga in December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
