Despite losing original Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Netflix is still pushing forward with their live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender. We don’t know when we’ll get our first teaser, but we do have a behind-the-scenes photo of Aang (Gordon Cormier) meeting the Firelord (Daniel Dae Kim).

While it’s very likely that Cormier would have grown a lot more by the time he meets the Firelord in the story, it does give us a good size comparison between the two. I do have to say, I’m not expecting Kim to do much in the first season, but he’s been very well cast as the show’s ultimate antagonist.
After the flop that was M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, there’s a lot of pressure for Netflix to do this adaptation right. After losing the original creators and messing up their adaptation for Cowboy Bebop, the bar is set incredibly low for this series. Even if that’s the case, this gives the live-action series every opportunity to surprise everyone.
With Airbender being adapted as a series, a big concern is that a TV budget won’t be able to properly give us the spectacle that is elemental bending; even Shyamalan’s version had people taking turns like it was a turn-based RPG. Hopefully the recent advancements in TV CG will be able to catch up. We’ll just have to wait and see until we get that first teaser.
