A24: Jessie Buckley is Being Tormented in New Trailer for Alex Garland’s Men

Alex Garland has been a name to watch out for when it comes to science fiction, dropping solid films like Ex Machina and Annihilation. With A24, however, it looks like Garland is going to be embracing the horror genre, but it’s not any less artsy.
Watch the official trailer for Garland’s Men starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear:
Though the film looks delightfully complicated enough, it does come with a very simple tagline that reads: “A young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.”
With Jessie Buckley starring in artsy films like The Lost Daughter and I’m Thinking of Ending Things, we should probably expect this movie to be more of the arthouse horror that A34 is known to produce. With Buckley getting the nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars this year, you can bet that a lot more people are interested in seeing her on the big screen.
With Buckley’s character apparently being haunted by everyone looking like Rory Kinnear, the film feels a lot like Charlie Kaufman’s 2015 animated movie, Anomalisa, where David Thewlis plays a character who sees everyone as the same person. With that movie being a story about a man trying to escape mundanity, I think Men is going to have more of a feminist message and be a play on the take that ‘All Men are the Same.’
Then again, that’s just my guess based on A24’s reputation. It could be something completely different.
Men comes to theaters on May 20.
