A24 Goes Family Friendly with Trailer for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

While A24 has been known mostly for their mature films, they are now venturing into some kid-friendly territory with the animated movie Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

Watch this:

The synopsis reads:

Marcell, an adorable 1-inch-tall shell, lives with his grandmother, Connie, and their pet lint, Alan. After a documentary filmmaker discovers them, his short film garners Marcel millions of fans.

Jenny Slate provides the voice of Marcel with Isabella Rossellini providing the voice for Connie. Other actors in the film include Thomas Mann and Rosa Salazar, with Lesley Stahl playing herself. Director Dean Fleischer-Camp also has a role in the film.

The movie is actually based on a series of animated Marcel shorts that Fleischer-Camp has directed, and you can view three of them on his Youtube channel. Slate also provides the voices in the short, and she’ll be reprising the part again for the movie.

With the shorts coming out way back in 2010, it’s certainly been quite the wait to have this whole movie made. If anything, the colors and composition have undergone a vast improvement for the movie, and with A24’s signature style and tone, we should expect this movie not to feel like your usual Pixar/Disney fare. Let’s just hope that A24 isn’t planning to secretly traumatize the audience, what with their track record for artsy, shocking films.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is set to come out to theaters on June 24.
