'A Million Little Things' Season 2, Episode 2 'Grand Canyon' Review: Chances

For some reason, I kept thinking this week’s episode “Grand Canyon” on A Million Little Things alluded to some kind of trip. It reminded me so much of Maggie’s (Allison Miller) pre-remission bucket list. But now, I realize that it’s simply the perfect description of everyone’s situation specifically the wounds and secrets haunting everyone. You just never really know how deep one thing runs.

Last week, it was all about starting a new chapter on A Million Little Things. Now, it seems to be the part of rebuilding and moving forward with second chances. Maggie’s mom Patricia (Melora Hardin) is in town. And to Maggie’s shock, she has just divorced Maggie’s dad and is planning on staying. Another surprise is that Katherine (Grace Park) has come back home. Meanwhile, Delilah (Stephanie Szostak) is still looking for closure over Jon. And on another end, PJ (Chandler Riggs) makes a shocking confession to Rome (Romany Malco).

Mommy Problems

Patricia’s visit has set the nerves on fire for Maggie. And it certainly doesn’t make it any better when Patricia pounces Maggie and Gary (James Roday) with the news that she’s divorcing Maggie’s dad. The reason? Patricia and her husband want different things, whatever that means. And now, Patricia’s here to stay. Maggie tries to clarify with her dad, but he gives an answer just as vague as his wife’s. Luckily, they have brunch and Regina’s bottomless mimosas to look forward to with Regina and Delilah.

Meanwhile, Delilah is facing a predicament of her own. Mitch (Rhys Coiro) and Barbara Nelson (Drea de Matteo) came over to visit. And despite Jon’s good intentions, they’re refusing to accept the money he left for them in the Rutledge trust. Unfortunately, Delilah can’t get them to change their minds and because of this, she feels like she’s failing Jon all over again.

Later on at the restaurant, Regina bristles whenever Andrew (James Tupper) gives a suggestion to improve the restaurant. But she lets it slide and focuses on her friends. Coincidentally, one of her old friends, Elon, is also present. When Delilah comes over to greet him, Elon offers his condolences surprising Delilah. As it turns out, Elon is a psychic. Gary doesn’t buy into all that stuff. But, fortunately for Elon, Delilah and Maggie do. Despite some mean comments from Gary, Delilah asks for a reading hoping to communicate with Jon.

Second Chances

Elsewhere, Katherine comes back home much to Theo’s (Tristan Byon) and Eddie’s (David Giuntoli) delight. Without much settling in, she jumps back into mommy mode and accompanies her son and Eddie to garden day. It suffocates her, however, and Eddie takes them back home. When Katherine and her suitcases suddenly disappear, later on, Eddie panics but to his relief, he finds Katherin upstairs.

Clearly, Katherine’s still torn. But, at the same time, she and Eddie do still want the same thing. This time though, instead of trying to go back to who they were once before, they decide to gradually figure out what they’re going to be. So, Katherine asks Eddie to stay. Before she goes, she asks Eddie what gender his baby is and congratulates him.

Finding Closure

Gary and Maggie come along to Delilah’s psychic reading. But, instead of Jon, Elon relays a message from someone else, Maggie’s late brother. Clearly upset, Maggie immediately goes on a run once they back home. While she’s out, Gary tells Patricia all about what happened. Just by the mention of it, Patricia’s face lights up in hope. As it turns out, she grieved her son in private for a very long time. But now, she’s come to realize that she has to treasure what she has now and that’s Maggie. And that’s one of the real reasons why she’s really in Boston.

Meanwhile, Delilah goes home unsatisfied. However, Andrew cheers her up a bit with some dinner. And with him, she finds herself confessing that she’s afraid of forgetting Jon. She still also feels guilty about what happened. But, as Andrew reminds her, she’s not going to get the forgiveness from anyone else but herself.

Secrets and Confessions

When Maggie returns from her run, Gary tells her the truth about Patricia’s visit. Nudging her in the right direction, Gary urges Maggie to accept her mother’s attempt at reconnecting and sends her off to the restaurant where Patricia’s dining alone. Getting there, Maggie couldn’t find her mother. So, she’s sent by the cranky Maitre’D to the bar where a stranger charmingly flirts with her. At one point, the stranger sends her off on a silly dare involving said Maitre’D. But, when Maggie turns around, she sees her mother with the stranger. They’re not intimate, but they’re acting familiar enough to send Maggie rushing out the doors.

Elsewhere, PJ goes to Rome for help and advice. He and his dad have been fighting again. And Rome kindly enough takes him under his wing. At Rome’s apartment, PJ notices Rome’s picture with the rest of the guys. Seeing Jon, he immediately asks Rome who he was. At first, Rome thought PJ was referring to Gary but, the kid clarifies without hesitance and points to Jon. After dinner, Rome realizes that PJ already knew Gary even though they’ve never met. When he goes to confront PJ about it, PJ admits that he thinks Jon might be his father.
