‘A Million Little Things’ Season 2 Premiere ‘Coming Home’ Review: Consequences

The aftermath of Jon’s death in A Million Little Things’ season 1 opened up a whole new side to the group’s friendship. And now that they’ve slowly made peace with Jon’s death, it’s time to deal with that newfound area of their friendship. Moving forward, however, doesn’t mean that Jon’s story is over. In A Million Little Things’ season 2 premiere titled “Coming Home,” it’s apparent that Jon’s narrative is now transitioning to Barbara Morgan’s story. Aside from that, the rest of the group is dealing with the consequences of new life.
Eddie (David Giuntolli) is trying to find a way to keep his marriage together while still being there for his new child. Rome (Romany Malco) and Regina (Christina Moses), on the other hand, are terribly at odds with having a child of their own. And last but not least, Maggie (Allison Miller) and Gary (James Roday) are trying their best to adjust to post-cancer life.
Birth
Picking right off last season’s finale, Eddie finally tells Katherine (Grace Kim) the truth about Delilah’s (Stephanie Szostak) child. And it tears Katherine apart. But, when they receive news that Delilah has gone into labor Katherine pushes Eddie to be there for his new child. When Theo asks about his dad, Katherine tries her very hardest to play it off and distract him. But, later on, she takes off leaving Theo in Eddie’s care.
At the hospital, Regina goes into the room with Delilah for support and also for documentation as per Rome’s request. Danny (Chance Hurstfield) buys a new baby bottle for his new sibling. And the rest of the guys order a crib for the child. Soon enough, the waiting drives them crazy and they head out to get the crib instead. But, before they could get far, Rome bursts and admits that he really wants his own baby. This sets off something in Gary and he turns to Eddie telling him to be there for his child. As it turns out, Gary has known all along that it was Eddie’s child because two years back, he drove John for a vasectomy. At his urging, Eddie heads to the delivery room and holds Delilah’s hand through the labor.
Preparations
A few days later, Eddie still hasn’t heard from Katherine. He has no idea where she is and the only lie he could tell Theo was that his mom was in a big case and she’ll be back soon. That same day, he and the guys are scheduled to pick up the crib for the baby. As soon as they get to the store, however, the salesman informs them that since they didn’t pick up the crib when they ordered it, it was sold to someone else and now, it’s out of stock. After a moment of frustration, Eddie sees the display crib. With Gary’s help, they haul it out of the store and into the car.
Suddenly, Eddie receives a text from his mother-in-law telling him that Katherine was at her place. Without hesitation, he and the guys head there. Eddie profusely apologizes and begs Katherine to go home. But, he comes out looking less hopeful than when he came in. While the guys were waiting for him, Gary comforts Rome over his dilemma. Rome might not be having a child of his own, but they’re all having a child all the same and Gary good-naturedly offers the lead parental role to Rome.
New Life
After the crib adventure, Gary heads home to Maggie. And to her shock, she finds that Gary has thrown away all her cancer meds. Clearly upset, she leaves for work. And surprise surprise, her new patient is none other than PJ (Chandler Riggs) who’s starting to suspect that his parents aren’t telling him the whole truth.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Delilah is having a hard time feeding her new daughter. Her doctor isn’t helping either with all the pressure and how she makes Delilah feel a lot worse. Trying to offer some help, Danny presents the baby bottle he bought. But, he gets quick harsh words from Delilah’s doctor and he leaves the room visibly upset. Throughout the whole day, Danny seems to lose the initial excitement he had over his new sister. Delilah continues to receive an onslaught of discouraging words from her doctor. Luckily, Maggie arrives and gives the doctor a pretty good ass whooping.
At the Dixon’s, Gary apologizes to Maggie. And Maggie admits that she kind of overreacted. It’s just that the last time she threw her cancer meds away, she discovered a lump the very next day. And since then, the fear has never left her. On the other hand, Delilah reveals to Eddie that she has decided on the name Charlotte for their baby. In return, Eddie tells Delilah that he has told Katherine the truth about the child.
New Consequences
Later in the evening, Delilah hands baby Charlotte to her big brother who feeds her with the blue baby bottle. And together, the family marvels at the new addition to the family. Sadly for Eddie, as much as he wants to celebrate, his mind is still torn with Katherine. The longer it gets, the more it seems that she’s not coming home.
Meanwhile, Gary and Maggie are still adjusting to their post-cancer life. When Gary sees that Maggie is still shaken about the meds thing, he wordlessly comes to her comfort and finds his own way to assure her that he’ll be there no matter what. Rome and Regina, on the other hand, finally comes to a conclusion with their own dilemma. No matter how much Rome wants a child, he still wants Regina in his life more and he’s not willing to throw what they have away.
While everyone was focused on the baby, someone was snooping around the Dixon’s. As it turns out, PJ saw Jon’s video to Barbara and the poor kid suspects that he’s his real father. And in his desperate search for answers, he went to the Dixon’s and took Jon’s photo album and Jon’s red Harvard sweater that was passed on to Gary.
‘A Million Little Things’ Season 2 Premiere Overall Verdict
The season 2 premiere of A Million Little Things did a great job of satisfying the anticipation that last season’s cliffhangers left. Now, the group is facing the new consequences to the new chapters of their lives after somewhat finding peace with Jon’s death. When it comes to the storytelling, however, it seems that A Million Little Things is back on shaky grounds. It didn’t land that upward swing of the momentum that should’ve propelled the new narratives forward. And it still can’t seem to settle on a pace to drive this new chapter. Hopefully, that changes soon.
A Million Little Things continues Thursday, October 3rd, with “Grand Canyon” at 9/8c on ABC.
