7 Star Wars “Legends” Storylines That Could Work as Spin-Off Movies

Star Wars is an integral part of pop culture. Ever since the first movie, A New Hope, Star Wars’ stories grew exponentially. However, most of these stories have recently branded as “Legends.” Due to the Disney buy-out in 2012, the company decided to make new storylines. Still, some Disney shows drew inspiration from “Legends” works, such as bringing Admiral Thrawn into Star Wars Rebels. Fortunately, the recent announcement for The Clone Wars’ Return, brings hope to longtime fans. Here are 7 “Legends” Storylines that could work as Spin-off Movies.
Shadows Of The Empire
Shadows of The Empire is a novel by Steve Perry published in 1996. Also, the book is part of Lucasfilm’s Shadows of The Empire multimedia project in the same year. The events take place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi. The characters of the story include the original heroes and villains, adding a few new characters.
The story includes Princess Leia, preparing a rescue operation to save the carbonized Han Solo from Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Darth Vader goes on a ruthless hunt for Luke Skywalker. Amidst this, a new enemy arises: Prince Xizor, the head of the Black Sun crime syndicate. However, Xizor works for Emperor Palpatine, but not with Darth Vader.
The excellent plot swiftly transitions into the events of Return of The Jedi. Also, it brings new characters to the saga. The story quickly became a crowd favorite. Shadows of The Empire had comics, a video game, and action figures released into the public. Since the story takes place between The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of The Jedi, Shadows of The Empire would make a fine addition to the Movie collection.
Splinter of The Mind’s Eye
Splinter of The Mind’s Eye is a novel by Alan Dean Foster, initially published in the year 1978. The events take place between A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back. Here, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker travel to the planet Circarpous IV to recruit additional troops. However, a strange storm caused by a gem that had power over the force ruptures their ship, causing them to land on Circarpous V, locally known as Mimban. Luke and Leia find themselves in a race to find the gem before the Imperials do.
One notable fact from the book is the setting, Mimban, also used in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Also, the plot mainly revolves around the Skywalker family. Splinter of The Mind’s Eye focused on the force and included lore about Kaiburr crystals. Kaiburr Crystals are an ancient force relic, increasing a force user’s abilities exponentially. Also, Kaiburr Crystals work as lightsaber crystals. Disney may have rebranded Kaiburr Crystals, but seeing this story on the big screen would still turn out well.
Boba Fett Young Adult Book Series
Scholastic published the Boba Fett Young Adult Book Series written by Terry Bisson and Elizabeth Hand. The events take place between Attack of The Clones and Revenge of The Sith. The Series gives us an account of what Boba Fett’s life is like right after his father dies. Also, it provides us with a background of Boba’s bounty hunter beginnings.
Star Wars The Clone Wars shows a few episodes about Boba Fett’s life, but this series offers more content about Boba compared to the show. While this series is intended for young readers, the storyline falls in well with the events of the prequels. Also, a famous bounty hunter named Durge is part of the series, a fascinating character who deserves some screen time as well.
Young Jedi Knights
Another book series intended for young readers, Young Jedi Knights is a 14 book series written by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebbeca Moesta between June 1995 and December 1998. Both Boulevard and Berkeley Jam published the books. The story takes place years after Return of The Jedi. Also, most of its characters are new. These include the Solo Twins, Jacen and Jaina, a young wookie named Lowbacca, Zekk, Tenel Ka, and Raynar Thul.
The different story arcs of the series mainly involve the New Jedi Order established by Luke Skywalker. Also, the main characters of the series are Skywalker’s apprentices. In the new Disney Movies, there is little information about Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy. The lack of facts presents a huge plot hole that Young Jedi Knights could fill, if not inspire a similar story.
The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi
The novel The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi is written by Ryder Windham and published in August 2008 by Scholastic. Its initial target release was October 2008, a year after The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader, its predecessor. The story is a retelling of the six movies from Obi-Wan’s point of view, including references to previous Legends works.
News about an Obi-Wan spin-off movie circulated through the internet recently, making this a likely choice if Disney decides to adopt some story elements. Undoubtedly, Obi-Wan is a fan favorite, and making a file about him is a tremendous task. Basing the film from some aspects of this story make him feel familiar to fans, both old and new.
Death Troopers
If you are interested in suspense, zombies, and Star Wars, then this book is for you. Joe Schreiber wrote Death Troopers, released on October 2009. The events of this book take place before A New Hope. The plot is about a distant Imperial prison, overrun by a deadly virus that causes the dead to turn into zombies. The characters include prisoners Aur Myss, the siblings Kale and Trig Longo, a 2-1B Surgical Droid named Waste, and Imperials Captain Jareth Sartoris and Chief Medical Officer Zahara Cody.
Zombie movies have become popular within the last few years. A Star Wars Zombie movie is something never done before, but if done right, would be an instant box office hit. The idea of having zombies exist in the Star Wars Universe is not at all impossible; perhaps even acceptable. Adding a zombie movie brings a unique twist to the franchise, but a welcome one, nonetheless.
The Thrawn Trilogy
The Thrawn Trilogy includes Timothy Zahn’s three following novels: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. It introduces one of the saga’s new, famous characters: Grand Admiral Thrawn. The events of this trilogy happen nine years after the Battle of Yavin in Return of The Jedi. Additionally, the protagonists include the heroes from the Original Trilogy, as well as a handful of new characters.
Grand Admiral Thrawn is part of the New Canon, thanks to Disney’s Star Wars Rebels. While Thrawn is the antagonist in the series, fans wish to see him in the big screen as well. After all, The Thrawn Trilogy sparked new interest in Star Wars during the year 1991. Crowds would undoubtedly line up to see Thrawn in the big screen.
That concludes this list of possible Star Wars “Legends” storylines that could work as Spin-Off Movies. Star Wars has a lot of projects in development, so it is best to remain updated for the latest news. In the meantime, reading about the mentioned storylines is highly recommended.
