There are a lot of ways for us to enjoy and glorify our day of independence, and that could mean having a backyard barbecue while watching the fireworks, revisiting historical sites to get a grip on America’s rich history, and many more. But for those who’d love to be reminded of how important this day is for all of us through cinematic art, we’ve prepared five movies to watch to evoke patriotism and pride. These movies are hand-picked to be the best in its genre from the day of its premiere.
1. A Few Good Men (1992)
Struggling to prove the innocence of his fellow countrymen, Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) goes head to head with his higher officer Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson). Due to this act of regency, Kaffee demands to prove that guilt should be pointed to those who gave the orders, not to the loyal men who follow them. Directed by Rob Reiner, and also starring Demi Moore, A Few Good Men is a must watch.
2. Glory (1989)
Glory is a story about the first all-black volunteer company who fought and struggled to combat prejudice and Confederates from the Union soldiers. Directed by Edward Zwick and starring Robert Gould Shaw, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman, Glory is a movie that will not only prove the importance of independence but also why it should be treasured.
3. Rocky IV (1985)
Rocky IV is a story of an American boxer going against a Russian adversary to prove not only excellence but also the strength and heart for his fellow Americans. After this American boxer loses his friend in a boxing match against the Russian Boxer Drago, Rocky faces him head on to avenge the loss. Starring Sylvester Stallone (who also directed the movie), Rocky IV stands out to be one of the best sports movies out there.
4. The Patriot (2000)
Going old-school with bayonets and swords, The Patriot saw Mel Gibson as a peaceful farmer who was forced to be part of the militia against the British soldiers who murdered his son. Written by Robert Rodat and directed by Roland Emmerich, The Patriot will not only remind you of the fight for independence but will also leave you astonished by the well-written storyline.
5. White House Down (2013)
White House Down follows the story of a humble father who took his child to the white house to witness history in the making and see the president. However, things go awry when terrorists take over the place, with Channing Tatum’s character tasked with saving the lives of both his daughter and the President. Also directed by Roland Emmerich, White House Down also stars Jamie Foxx and Joey King. It also has an emotional touch to a “justice and prejudice” type of narrative.
