The story of Jon Snow a.k.a. Aegon Targaryen had been open and shut with the finale of Game of Thrones, but it looks like the ‘King in the North’ is going to be making a comeback soon.
THR reports that HBO has begun early development of a Game of Thrones sequel that will have a story that takes place after the eighth season finale. We don’t know the exact scope of the show, but it has been said that Jon Snow will be making a comeback with Kit Harington expected to reprise the role.
The last we saw Jon, we has banished beyond the Wall for killing Daenerys, and it’s implied that he’ll become the new King Beyond the Wall. We don’t know what kind of story there is for Jon moving forward, but we do know that the show would be treading completely new ground.
If anything, this sounds like HBO trying to remedy the end of Game of Thrones by kickstarting the story up again. While a lot of people didn’t like the ending, a lot of fans agree it was more on the pace of how we got there, rather than what actually happened. It seems that George R.R. Martin did intend for Bran to sit on the Iron Throne and for Jon to kill Daenerys, but it was the breakneck pace of taking on the Night King and then the siege of King’s Landing that made the final season feel inorganic.
Then again, this is still early development we’re talking about. It’s very possible for HBO to reject the show like they did with the prequel series The Long Night. Hopefully House of the Dragon lasts a few years.
We don’t know when this Jon Snow spinoff is set to release, but House of the Dragon premieres on HBO Max on Aug. 21.
