A few months back, buzz was going around that Jared Leto would be starring in a third Tron movie, but so far, we haven’t gotten any updates. With Leto currently doing the press rounds for Morbius, he’s given a small update on his Tron movie and confirms it’s still in the works.
Talking to ScreenRant, Leto updates:
“I’m a super fan of Tron, and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney. Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.”
We don’t know exactly what the hold-up is with Tron, but it’s possible that Disney wants to make sure that the movie comes with a solid story. Though Tron: Legacy looked phenomenal when it came out, the story could have used a lot more brushing up; plus they were still working on the completely CG humans with young Jeff Bridges playing Clu.
Personally, I wouldn’t have minded if they continued the story of Legacy. It was said that the sequel would focus on digital world coming to the real world, and that Cillian Murphy’s character would then be the main antagonist. I guess plans fell through, and Tron stayed in hiatus. How are they even going to get Daft Punk back now that the duo has split?
I don’t know what Leto wants to do with Tron, but I am eager to come back to the world of the Grid. There’s just so much room to play around with the concept, and the new CG was definitely an upgrade.
No release date has been announced for Tron 3, but you can catch Leto when Morbius hits theaters on April 1.
