The 10 Most Emotional Moments on LOST

By Roxanne Sancto

September 22 2016 marks the twelfth anniversary of Lost – a show that is still the subject of some of the most interesting (if not frustrating!) discussions in entertainment history.

For six years, we followed the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 as they raced through the jungles chasing after phantoms, ran from black smoke monsters and confronted their deepest, darkest secrets. We feverishly discussed the theories we thought were most evident, only to be proven wrong in following episodes. And most of all, we loved, laughed and cried with every single one of the protagonists throughout its six year run.

There are certain moments on Lost that are so overwhelmingly emotional, we will never be able to erase them from our minds. So, in celebration of the upcoming anniversary, we invite you all to grab a box of tissues and relive some of Lost’s most important scenes with us.

8. I’m Real (Dave)

Jack and Locke may have been two of the most important men on the island in terms of keeping everyone safe, healthy and fed. But there’s also something to be said about the importance of keeping people happy and positive in a seemingly hopeless situation, and that’s where Hurley comes in.

His kindness and overall outlook on life is infectious and helped many an islander forget their woes, even if just for a moment; whilst attending Hurley’s makeshift golf-course, for example. However, although it may seem like he’s always in a good place, that’s not necessarily the case. The numbers that brought him to the island continue to haunt him and seem to show up wherever he goes, threatening his sanity.

That’s not the only test the island has in store for him, though; past demons rear their ugly heads when Hurley finds the hatch is stocked with food and he starts hoarding his own private stash. Ashamed and disgusted with himself, he confides in Libby. She encourages him to make a change through taking action – in other words, destroying his stash. He does so feeling great relief and pride, only to find that another massive parcel of food has been left on the island. The situation sends him into a psychosis which reunites him with his imaginary friend, Dave. Chasing him through the jungle, Hurley realizes once again that Dave is far from a friend; on the contrary, he only has Hurley’s worst interests at heart and tries to convince him that none of his surroundings and the people in it are real, that he is actually still stuck in a mental institution. When Libby finds him visibly upset and about to jump off a cliff following Dave’s example, she convinces him that she is indeed very real, as are her feelings for him.

Having believed that he is not worthy of a gorgeous woman like Libby, it is so heart-warming to see that he had it wrong. Libby shows him the love, respect and tenderness Hurley truly deserves.
